CHAPTER SIX

IT TOOK a few minutes to sort everything out. When they had, Mrs. Sisk, her mouth a grim line of disapproval, hustled Molly back inside the gated yard. When the two were out of sight, Brooke turned to Garrett, who was kneeling to restrain Larry.

“Mrs. Sisk is going to quit,” Brooke predicted.

“No, she’s not.” He looked equally certain of his opinion. “It’s all for show. If there’s one thing I’m sure of, it’s that she’d never leave Molly.”

“She doesn’t think she’ll have to.”

That got his attention. “What’s that supposed to mean?” he demanded.

Brooke spoke thoughtfully. “Didn’t you hear her? She intends to take Molly back to Chicago with her.”

“Not a chance,” he said flatly. “I’d never permit such a thing.” His lips thinned out in a line of displeasure. “You’ve misread the woman, Brooke. She won’t quit. But even if she did, she’d never expect me to let her take Molly back home.”

How did she get into these things? Brooke wondered. This was none of her business. She’d vowed to keep her distance from the Jacksons, for heaven’s sake. “Have it your way,” she said. Shifting Deadeye Dick from one arm to the other, she turned away, unable to resist adding in an undertone he couldn’t possibly hear, “But you’re wrong.”

He heard. “Wanna bet?”

She stopped short; the man must have incredible hearing. Slowly she turned to face him where he still knelt beside the now-docile dog. His strong, handsome face was tilted up to her and the light of challenge gleamed in his beautiful golden eyes.

“Yes,” she surprised herself by saying. “Yes, Mr. Wise Guy, I want to bet!”

“You do? Gotcha!” With a final glance at the cat safe in her arms, he released the terrier and rose to his feet in one smooth motion. A speculative smile touched his mouth, attractively tilting his lips at the corners.

“Now hang on a minute!” She took a hasty step back. “That was just a figure of speech.”

He shook his head, taunting her. “You can’t back out now. You just bet me that Mrs. Sisk wouldn’t last the summer and I took you up on it. So what’re the stakes?”

“The what?”

“What’s at stake here?” he explained patiently. “What does the winner win—and what does the loser lose?”

“I have no idea.”

He rubbed his hands together as if in anticipation and she found herself staring at the long, strong fingers. His hands, like the rest of him, were graceful and well-formed.

“Then I’ll help you out,” he offered. “How about breakfast in—”

“You’ve got the most one-track mind of any man I ever met,” she wailed.

“And you’re easier to tease than any woman I ever met,” he countered. “Com’ on, Brooke, lighten up. We’re both adults here. A little extracurricular activity wouldn’t do either of us any harm.”

Oh, no? She cast about frantically for a way to distract him, something she could offer in case she lost—which she wouldn’t Maybe she should call his bluff; it might be worth it to—

And then she flashed on an
